The Ebro
A legend in its own lifetime, the River Ebro is a 'must visit' centre for fishermen from all over Europe. Indeed fishermen from all over the world have sat on the banks and waited for the fish to take the bait. The Catfish is the most famous of the species sought by visiting optimists and many very large specimens have been landed. Driving along the valley gives an impression of the size and strength of the river but to really enjoy a boat trip gives the river a whole new dimension.
It starts at Fontibre in the province of Cantabria and flows for 565 miles (910 km) in a souteasterly course to the Mediterranean Sea passing LogroƱo, Zaragoza, Barcelona, Valencia, Flix, Tortosa, and Amposta before ending in a delta on the Mediterranean Sea in the province
of Tarragona. It is the longest river wholly in Spain and the second longest in the Iberian Peninsula. It has the greatest discharge and the largest drainage basin of any Spanish waterway. It is navigable for only 15 miles (25 km) upstream from its delta.
Just along the Ebro River from Riverside Lodge is the recently built Puente de la Barca (bridge), the largest in Catalonia. Underneath is the Club Nautico (Nautical Club) with facilities for canoeing and other sports. Further up the river is the Ermita de Santa Madrona (hermitage), which was built at the end of the 19th century, and the Reservoir, which was inaugurated in 1986 and which has been converted into a very interesting tourist spot, above all for Central European visitors. Here, you can fish for Eels catfish, common carp, pike, perch, black bass and other fish; international competitions are held at this site as well. Thanks to the initiative of private companies, navigation along the Ebro has been developed, and now we can offer boat tours and fishing facilities.
The construction of the reservoir meant that the Ermita de Berrus (hermitage), shared jointly by several towns, had to be moved to a new site. Before the construction of the dams, the River Ebro was a route for shipping goods on sailing boats called LLauts. Two of these boats have been restored for purpose of cultural interest.
